Digital Advertising vs. Print Advertising
A study conducted by the renowned German Öko-Institut found that the CO₂ emissions of digital advertising are 30% higher than those of print advertising and paper-based ads. What is often overlooked is that digital advertising requires enormous amounts of data to be processed through servers and networks. Every time someone opens a brochure or flyer online, servers around the world are running in the background. These servers consume vast amounts of energy and water, resulting in significant CO₂ emissions.
Recycle, Recycle!
Of course, paper is not produced without environmental impact. However, what people often forget is that paper can be recycled many times. Newsprint can be reused 7 to 8 times, and other types of paper up to 25 times. Thanks to this repeated reuse, paper is actually a very responsible option.
So, What’s the Real Difference?
Other research shows that printed advertising leaflets are still extremely popular. As many as 90% of people in the Netherlands flip through brochures that’s around 12.9 million people. Those are impressive numbers.
But what is the real difference in COâ‚‚ emissions between online and printed brochures? The answer is bigger than you might expect. When a brochure is viewed 1 million times, emissions are more than five times lower for the printed version.
And let’s be honest isn’t it much nicer to hold a brochure in your hands than to view it online?
