How do you develop a good corporate identity?

How do you develop a good corporate identity ?

What is included in a corporate identity?

  • Logo

  • Typography

  • Colors

  • Paper and material choices

  • Form language (shapes)

  • Image style (Illustration and photography)

  • Communication style (Tone-of-voice)

1.    Consider what you want to radiate as a company

It is important to properly consider what type of image you want for your company. Corporate identity is very important for the overall identity of your business. This means your corporate identity should be completely unique, and that is no use copying it from another company. Examples of brands with a good corporate identity are Nike and the chocolate brand Milka. They make their corporate identity come back in everything they do, so they always remain recognizable and unique.

2.    Consider your target audience

When setting up your corporate identity, don't forget who you want to reach. The design of your corporate identity should not only look good but should also match your target audience. Consider what they like and process this into your corporate identity. A younger audience should be approached in a different manner than an older audience. The toy store Intertoys for example has young children as their target audience. To get their attention, they use a playful font and a bright shade of yellow.

3.    Be consistent

To make your corporate identity succeed, it is important to consistently use it. By using your corporate identity in all means of communication, you remain recognizable to your customer and you set yourself apart from your competitors. Consistent application of your corporate identity can be difficult, especially if you are new to designing and are unsure which elements have already been used for older designs. It is useful to make a corporate identity manual in which you place all the elements of your corporate identity. These elements include things such as your logo, color palette, graphic elements, and typography. This manual will allow multiple people to work on designing and the corporate identity, while still getting matching results.

4.    Typography

Your typography should also match with what your company wants to radiate, and with the type of company you have. A clothing company for example has very different typography than a real-estate office. We recommend you use a maximum of two different fonts: one for the titles and important parts of your text, and one for the general text. This way, your text will remain easy to read and the reader can easily distinguish the most important parts of the text.

5.    Color

The use of color is every definable for corporate identity and can evoke certain emotions and associations within people, both negative and positive. For example, the color green is often associated with the environment or health, while grey radiates elegance and stability. Make sure the colors you choose match with your company and lead to the recognizability of your brand and/or product.

6.    Presentation

Don't forget that your corporate identity has to be presented in all sizes and on all types of screens. It is therefore important that your corporate identity is responsive, meaning that your website or design automatically adapts to any size. You can think of a desktop website that also works the moment you open it on your phone or tablet.
