What is grammage?

Grammage is a term in the paper industry for the mass of paper per unit of area. The weight of paper is expressed in grams per square meter (g/m2). 1 m2 of 80-gram paper, therefore, weighs 80 grams. The standard A0 paper size has an area of 1 m2, so an A0 size poster printed on 180-gram paper weighs 180 grams. The heavier the weight of the paper, the thicker and sturdier it is. This makes paper with a higher grammage suitable for cards and book covers, and other paper suitable for flyers and interiors.
